Whether it’s your first day on the job or your last, knowing that the USW is there to protect workers’ interests gives members peace of mind and allows them to pursue productive and prosperous careers.
The first step toward protecting workers’ job security is to organize a union. Forming or joining a union means members have a powerful collective voice that they can use to negotiate strong job protections and stand up for their fellow workers. Through contract provisions like just cause and grievance procedures, the USW makes sure that workers have an avenue to challenge unjust dismissals and fight for union members’ jobs.
Negotiating strong contracts is at the heart of what USW members do. Our contracts are comprehensive—they lay out workers’ wages, benefits, scheduling, vacation and other provisions, including measures that enhance job security. By laying down clear terms about these provisions, the union ensures that every worker knows where they stand and what their rights are.
USW members have seen their share of company consolidations, plant sales and other major changes from employers over the years. We know that workers’ bargaining power doesn’t disappear just because a company or a factory changes hands or threatens to close. While we can’t prevent every sale or closure, the USW works hard to minimize the impact of any transaction on our members. This includes protecting pensions and other funds from being raided or diminished.
By bargaining contract language such as successorship clauses and other provisions, the USW ensures that corporate transitions won’t erode members’ rights or benefits. The union is always prepared to act if any aspect of a new company structure threatens the security or rights of workers.
Fair treatment on the job is a cornerstone of the labor movement and the very reason we organize. USW contracts explicitly lay out disciplinary procedures so that every member is treated fairly and equally. This clarity helps prevent any biased application of rules and ensures that all members are subject to the same standards.
From providing representation during grievances to defending members against unjust termination, the USW is committed to fairness in the workplace. These efforts extend beyond individual issues, encompassing broad advocacy to uphold the rights of all workers.
Join the USW and experience the power of unity. We are a community committed to protecting our members and enhancing their job security. Through organizing, negotiating and continuous advocacy, we ensure our members are always protected.
