Carolyn Williams Appreciates the Labor Movement, and is Appreciated by Union Plus

Thirty-six years ago, Carolyn Williams joined IBEW local 613 in Atlanta, Ga., as an inside electrical apprentice.  Since then, Williams has risen to the position of director of the IBEW Civic and Community Engagement Department. Her williams2responsibilities include developing and implementing membership and community outreach programs. Williams focuses on human and civil rights, retiree clubs, women’s affairs, young workers initiatives, charitable fundraising, work and family programs and community services.

“The labor movement provides a diverse group of people a space where they can come together to support struggles (shared and unshared), learn about other cultures and ways of being and develop lifelong friendships,” said Williams. “[It] molded the United States and made it possible for us to be a more just society; one where we can fight for fair wages and respectful and safe work environments. It means that I, along with countless number of others, am able to provide for my family, have dignity at work, along with healthcare and a reasonable retirement.”

By becoming a Union Plus liaison in 2006, Williams is able to better support and represent the labor movement she loves. Her favorite event as a liaison was the 2013 Liaison Conference in Puerto Rico, where everyone participated in a Habitat for Humanity project. In addition to working as a team with fellow liaisons, Williams said that “having an opportunity to meet the family, as they worked right beside us, reinforced the significance of our work.”

As a Union Plus liaison, Williams is better able to help her fellow IBEW members who she said, “have experienced significant challenges related to employment,” in the last few years. Because IBEW represents several different trades, union members have different benefits which Williams said are covered by the many benefits of Union Plus. Williams continues to protect and serve her fellow IBEW members as a Union Plus liaison, and everyone at Union Plus thanks her for the hard work she does.
