The Homer Wilson Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the 2016 scholarship winners – Mahalie Hammett from Gaylesville, Alabama and Grant Trainer from Wilmington, North Carolina.
Below is information about the winners.
Lauren Mahalie Hammett graduated from Gaylesville High School in Gaylesville, Alabama in 2016. While in high school Lauren participated in Beta Club, FFA and FCCLA for four years. During her
Lauren will be attending Georgia Highlands in Rome, Georgia this fall to obtain her career in Dental Hygiene.junior year she was a member of Youth Leadership Cherokee. During her senior year Lauren was active in basketball, volleyball, cheer and softball and earned team captain of every sport she participated in all the while working a part time job at a local restaurant.
Grant J. Trainer is an 18 year old senior at John T. Hoggard High School in Wilmington, North Carolina. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 26 and has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He also served Troop 26 as an Assistant Senior Patrol Leader and elected to the Order of the Arrow (Honor Society of Boy Scouts) in 2012. He enjoys camping, fishing, hiking the Appalachian Trail, and playing lacrosse.
Some of Grant’s other accomplishments include being a member of the National Honor Society of High School Scholars, National Honor Society at Hoggard High School, Friends of Rachael Club (anti-bullying club)- Officers of Compassion and Action Section, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Oceanography Club.
Grant is active with his church youth group participating in building handicap ramps and re-roofing houses in Texas and Tennessee. He has assisted with Feed the Homeless Ministry and completed hundreds of hours of community service this year.
He will be attending Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC where he will study Exercise Science and plans to pursue a Doctorate in Physical Therapy.
