That’s the message from the United Steelworkers Local 8888 President Arnold Outlaw. Local 8888 staff and volunteers hit the gates hard at Newport News Shipbuilding last week to hand out leaflets comparing the records of presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Local 8888 represents more than 11,000 workers who build nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and nuclear-powered submarines at the Virginia shipyard. “Trump is a wild card,” said Outlaw. “He’s the scariest, nastiest, most egotistical and least prepared candidate in my lifetime.” Outlaw praised Hillary for having President Obama’s back and for opposing bad trade deals that steal jobs from American workers. “Hillary knows her stuff. I’ll take her performance over Trump’s promises any day. The only thing Trump produces in this country are HUGE lies.”
Outlaw also applauded Clinton’s choice of U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine (Virginia) as her running mate. “Tim Kaine is a solid choice for vice president. He’s always stood up for our members in the shipyard and for working families across Virginia.”
The bulls-eye is squarely on Virginia in this crucial presidential election. Outlaw said the activism and turnout of union voters like Local 8888 members could decide the winner in Virginia. “We cannot and we will not take anybody or any vote for granted,” he said. His blunt message to union voters: “Don’t play the Trump card in November. Stay sane with Clinton and Kaine.”
