Health Care, Public Sector Workers Build Solidarity

More than 250 USW members who work in health care and public services are spending two days in Pittsburgh sharing stories, learning from each other and building their collective strength to fight back against ongoing attacks on workers in both sectors of the economy.

“We are facing very challenging times,” said USW International Vice President Fred Redmond, who oversees the USW’s health care and public sector divisions. “But we do our work with a sense of pride, knowing that the work we do benefits the many.”

Members heard from Redmond as well as International President Leo W. Gerard, who exhorted the crowd to take their fighting spirit and solidarity back to their locals and use it to energize their fellow Steelworkers, from British Columbia to Southern California to the Virgin Islands.

After a morning of introductory speeches, the members broke into groups for breakout sessions covering topics such as collective bargaining, arbitration and grievances, political engagement, organizing,  and addressing violence in the workplace, among others.

“The knowledge you all gain here doesn’t just belong to you,” Gerard said. “It belongs to all of the members of this union. Take it home and put it to use for them.”
