USW Local 235A bargaining committee member Jessie Green, along with USW staff member Mike Zielinski, joined other union members from Glencore workplaces around the world last week at the Glencore Latin American Network meeting organized by the global union coalition IndustriALL.

The meeting included union members from the U.S. as well as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Suriname and Uruguay.

Hosted by USW allies from Mexico’s Los Mineros union at their headquarters in Mexico City, the meeting included lengthy discussions about ways in which workers around the world can increase pressure on Glencore to end the year-long lockout at Sherwin Alumina.

“Glencore is a giant company with operations all over the world,” Green said. “The only way to win this fight is to confront them on a global scale. That is why joining together with our brothers and sisters in other countries is so important.”

The Glencore Global Network, which also includes unions from Africa, Australia and Europe, will meet in early 2016 to focus on organizing a global day of action aimed at Glencore. The group also will work with other organizations to expose Glencore’s repeated abuses of workers and communities around the world.
