Medix Employees Join Steelworkers Union

The United Steelworkers (USW) announced today that paramedics and emergency medical technicians employed by Medix Ambulance in Oregon and Washington have voted to join the union and its Health Care Workers Council.

In an election conducted June 13 by the National Labor Relations Board, 21 Medix employees voted for the union and 12 voted against with four ballots challenged. There were 45 employees eligible to vote.

“We are excited to welcome these new members to the union,” said USW International Vice President Fred Redmond, “and we look forward to working with other medical transport workers in the area.”

Medix Ambulance is located in Warrenton, Ore., and provides 911 and medical transport services to Oregon’s northwest coastal region as well as communities across the Columbia River in southwest Washington. The company deploys ambulances from Warrenton, Seaside and Astoria in Oregon and from Ilwaco, Wash.

Medix is owned by J.D. Fuiten, who operates other ambulance services in Oregon.  Medix employees are the first Fuiten operation to vote for union representation.  Fuiten also operates Metro West Ambulance Service in Hillsboro, Ore., Pacific West Ambulance, and Newport and Bay Cities Ambulance in Coos Bay.

The USW represents 850,000 members in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean, including 46,000 health care and pharmaceutical workers. It is the largest private sector union in North America, representing workers in a wide range of industries including metals, mining, rubber, paper and forestry, oil refining, plus office, technical and service workers in health care, security, hotels and municipal governments and agencies.
