Nursing home staff data now publicly available via CMS

As nursing homes continue to struggle with finding staff, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is now requiring nursing homes, as of January 26, to report their employee turnover rates and weekend staffing levels for direct care staff.

The employee-level data will be posted in the Payroll-Based Journal (PBJ) section of data.cms.gov.  Additionally, CMS will add the measures of turnover and weekend staffing to the facility-level files posted on the Provider Data Catalog, in the section for “Nursing homes including rehab services.”

The labor movement has pushed hard to make this happen. These new publicly reported turnover rates and other staffing stats could be a powerful tool and locals should consider reviewing an employer’s numbers as part of bargaining preparations and messaging.
