USW Local 288 members testified July 14, 2016 at a public hearing hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy regarding the proposed rule-making for the Chronic Beryllium Disease Prevention Program.
Chronic beryllium disease, or CBD, causes scarring of the lung tissue. It occurs when a person inhales dust or fumes of beryllium, a naturally occurring lightweight material, and has become sensitized to this material. Beryllium is used in various industries, such as electronics, aerospace, dental, atomic energy and defense.
District 9 is proud of our members’ activism and work on such an important issue,” stated Director Daniel Flippo. “Local 288 is to be commended for their efforts in assuring a safe and healthy work environment for their members.” USW Local 288 represents workers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) located in Oak Ridge, TN. The Department of Energy is revising current CBDPP rules due to research conducted since the original ruling, finalized in December 1999, which established the CBDPP.
