Thousands of steelworkers and supporters rallied in Granite City on May 16 to protest a ruling by the U.S. Department of Commerce that is allowing a flood of subsidized South Korean steel into the United States.
Holding signs that read “Save our Steel Jobs” and “Keep it Made In America, they chanted, “Jobs!” and “American steel,” as speakers called on the government to protect their jobs.”
At issue is the Commerce Department’s decision holding that South Korean steelmakers are not “dumping” tube steel on the U.S. market.
Congressman Bill Enyart (D-Belleville) said if the federal government doesn’t enforce trade regulations on South Korean steel, 28 thousand jobs could be lost in the U.S., “When we built the skyscrapers and the bridges and the Arch, what were they built with? American steel! Who built them? American workers!”
