United Steelworkers Stand with Los Mineros in the Struggle Against Grupo Mexico

On March 19, United Steelworkers joined with Los Mineros workers to lend their support to Rio Sonora property owners. United Steelworkers District 12 Director Bob LaVenture, Sub-district Director Manuel Armenta and Labor Educator Erika Wills stood with almost 2,000 workers and their families at the Grupo Mexico Cananea Buenavista Mine.

Occupying the water transfer station causes the mine to be unable to operate without water. This is symbolic, as the Rio Sonora people are now without clean water because of Grupo’s disregard for health and safety concerns at the mine.

Rio Sonora property owners have had their water supplies/wells polluted, crops ruined, livestock killed, and health problems due to the acid spill caused by the mine water that flowed into the Rio Sonora. Grupo Mexico has failed to compensate the farmers for their loss.

For the Los Mineros workers, this is a continuing struggle to reach a collective bargaining agreement with Grupo Mexico.
