Unity Key in 2016 Election

USW International Vice President Fred Redmond and progressive talk show host Leslie Marshall this week discussed the 2016 presidential election and the USW’s endorsement of Hillary Clinton.

There were two outstanding candidates in the race, said Redmond, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. Both had enthusiastic followings among USW members, but now that Clinton is the presumptive Democratic nominee, the union is able to throw its full weight behind her campaign.

It’s imperative, Redmond said, that working people stick together in backing a candidate that will fight for their priorities: righting income inequality, reining in corporate greed, ensuring retirement security, and most importantly, prioritizing infrastructure investments that will help create jobs, all issues Clinton has long embraced and Sanders helped bring to the fore.

Donald Trump, on the other hand, has nothing to offer workers, said Redmond. He regularly bilks his contractors. He outsources the production of his clothing line and other goods to China. He refuses to negotiate with his union work force, and he’s spent his whole campaign spewing sexist, racist, xenophobic bile meant to insight division and discord.

“Here in America we celebrate our differences,” said Redmond. “We work with each other as a country, and we embrace each other as we try to correct the many problems we have. And the only candidate we feel that could pull the American people together for the good of this country is Hillary Rodham Clinton.”
