(September 18) – Members of our USW bargaining committee have been holding meetings with our brothers and sisters at U.S. Steel locations around the country, reviewing the company’s and the union’s most recent contract proposals, discussing the status of negotiations and getting feedback from members about what our next steps should be.
Though there has been no significant progress to report on bargaining in recent days, talks will continue, and we remain committed to bargaining for as long as it takes to reach a fair agreement.
Unfortunately, throughout the summer the company has continued to use the industry’s difficult market conditions as an excuse to gut our contract. While our committee has made progress on some issues, the company’s proposal still contains far too many unrealistic concessions.
No matter what the company claims, we know that gutting the wages and benefits of hard-working union members is not the answer to the current crisis. Instead, we must work together to combat the devastating effects that unfairly traded imports, global overcapacity and currency manipulation have had on our American steel industry. We will be providing more information over the next several weeks about how you can help us address these issues.
In the meantime, we encourage our brothers and sisters at all U.S. Steel locations to talk to your CAT coordinators, your officers and your bargaining committee to find out the latest information. Stay strong and help us show U.S. Steel that we are UNITED in our fight for a fair contract!
In Solidarity,
Your 2015 U.S. Steel Bargaining Committee
