The AFL-CIO Martin Luther King Civil (MLK) and Human Rights Conference was held in Atlanta, GA., January 15 – 19, 2015. For the first time United Steelworkers (USW) were asked to take the lead by handling registration, community service events, sergeant-at-arms and exhibit hall events under the leadership of USW Vice President of Human Affairs Fred Redmond.
USW members also assisted with community service projects which consisted of building furniture, reading to school children, preparing food in soups kitchens, rebuilding parks and homes. They also participated in one of the largest MLK marches which attracted thousands of people to his hometown of Atlanta.
A memorable moment was when President of Emeritus and Coalition of Black Trade Unionists Bill Lucy was honored with a Lifetime Achievement award.
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” was a famous question of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the United Steelworkers answered this call by going out and actually making it happen in the community.
This project is just one of so many USW’s amazing members do every day to give back to our communities. If you or your local are doing good things in your community, we want to hear about them.
