USW Cares: USW Local 13-752L is Serving Their Community and Their Members

Submitted by Jarita Sobak

A project which began in late July finally came to close this month when United Steelworker Local 13-752L Women of Steel (WOS) members handed out school supplies to over 150 children in Texarkana, AR.

In early July, the WOS committee was looking for a project to work on that would assist people in the community. A company/union softball game was arranged thanks to the instrumental work done by Local Union President David Boone. And, on July 25, the game was held and money was collected by the WOS Committee.

The WOS Committee was able to purchase enough supplies to help 150 children and earlier this month WOS Chair Jarita Sobak and Tawana Taylor handed them out.

Soback was moved by all the support from company and union members and was pleased to see a relationship building between the union, the company and the community. “We are working hard to serve our community and to serve our members,” said Sobak.

For their next project, Cooper Tire is allowing the WOS Committee members to do a walkthrough this fall to collect money to help the Harvest Texarkana Food Bank.

This project is just one of so many USW’s amazing members do every day to give back to our communities. If you or your local are doing good things in your community, we want to hear about them.
