USW Cares: Ronald Palmer, District 3’s Jefferson Award Winner for Dedication to Awareness & Accessibility

For District 3’s Jefferson Award winner, Ronald Palmer, volunteering and raising funds for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides is more than charity work—for him, it’s personal. Ronald and his wife, Stacy, have four children, each with varying disabilities. This makes the cause of advocating for better access to service dogs, particularly for children in school, one close to their hearts.

“I have seen the results of having a service dog with my own son and I want to be able to allow as many people who need it to have that opportunity,” Ronald said.

Over the last five years, Ronald has worked with the government in the province of Alberta to make significant improvements in accessibility and licensing of service dogs. He and Stacy are also planning a grand fundraising event called A Cause for Country, a country music concert benefiting the Lions Foundation.

“This is a continuing effort,” Ronald said. “As we make small steps in the improvement of awareness and accessibility, the lives of many will be improved.”
