Shop Stewards play important roles in the United Steelworkers. They are the front line of defense for our members and for our collective bargaining agreements. In many instances they are often the first contact new hires have with the Union.
To ensure that as many Local Unions as possible have the opportunity to obtain education for their Stewards, District 10 has scheduled six day-long Steward workshops to be held during the month of May on the dates and at the locations listed below:
MONDAY, MAY 9, 2016 Local 12698’s Union Hall | TUESDAY, MAY 10, 2016 Local 2599’s Union Hall | MONDAY, MAY 16, 2016 Local 1688’s Union Hall |
TUESDAY, MAY 17, 2016 AFSCME Hall | WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 2016 Local 2227’s Union Hall | THURSDAY, MAY 19, 2016 Local 1016’s Union Hall |
The workshops are interactive and cover the basic responsibilities of a Steward, including the legal rights of a Steward and how to represent members before an employer. Each program will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude no later than 5 p.m. Members who attend should bring a copy of their collective bargaining agreement.
A registration fee of $25 per student must accompany the enclosed registration form. Lunch will be provided. Local Unions will be responsible for any lost time, travel and/or expenses, and room reservations for overnight stays, if necessary.
Education is an essential building block for power and solidarity in our union. We encourage you to send your new and experienced Stewards to learn and share in this experience.
