Members of United Steelworkers (USW) District 4 and Keywell Metals, located in Falconer, N.Y., are currently negotiating their first contract, and striving to reach a tentative agreement regarding wages, hours, terms and conditions of employment, including safety language. Local union members have been in negotiations for this contract since February 2014.
The USW Health, Safety and Environment department, working alongside Sub-District Director Jim Shaughnessy, was recently brought in to work with the local’s safety representative to include the language needed to ensure worker health and safety.
“This is a work-in-progress,” Shaughnessy said, “but we hope to come to an agreement within the next couple of weeks.”
Keywell Metals assumed control from a former company, but still hold the same ownership and managers have assumed the same responsibilities as the previous company.
