International Vice-President Fred Redmond led a delegation of African-American USW leaders participating in an exchange organized with the Brazilian Metalworkers Confederation CNM/CUT on “The Fight Against Racism in Brazil and the United States” at their headquarters in São Bernardo do Campo. Participants from the USW and the Brazilian metal and chemical workers’ unions discussed the history of racial inequality in the two countries and trade union strategies to promote equality and inclusion on the job, in the union, and in society in the face of right-wing attacks.
As part of the exchange, the United Steelworkers (USW) and the National Confederation of Metalworkers CNM/CUT this week released the following joint statement about the fight to end racism and inequality in the United States and Brazil:
“Workers from Brazil and the USA participating in the exchange organized by the United Steelworkers and the National Confederation of Metalworkers CNM/CUT on “The Fight Against Racism in Brazil and the United States” in São Bernardo do Campo have discussed the history of racial inequality in the two countries and trade union strategies to promote equality and inclusion on the job, in the union, and in society.
We stand united in the fight against neoliberal policies that threaten the economicprogress made by Black workers, police violence against our young people, mass incarceration of Black men and women, and suppression of political participation and the right to vote, especially the exclusion of Black women from power.
We vehemently reject the impeachment of President Dilma and the attacks on former President Lula which are an attempt by right-wing forces to roll back the progressive policies that have won economic security and political rights for Afro-Brazilians.
We also condemn the divisive and racist language of some candidates in the US presidential election.
We pledge to work together to continue the fight against racism and violence, to defend democracy. and for a life of dignity and equality.”
