On Jan. 5, we secured a narrow pro-worker majority in the U.S. Senate with the victories of two USW-endorsed candidates, Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, in runoff elections in Georgia.
Many doubted that Georgia could decide the fate of the Senate, but a diverse coalition of groups including Black women, civil and voting rights activists, and others laid the foundation for this successful campaign, creating a model for contesting seats throughout the South.
Leading up to Election Day, USW members helped contribute to Warnock and Ossoff’s wins by knocking on doors, making phone calls and writing postcards to Georgia voters.
The U.S. House has a pro-worker majority of just four seats and the Senate is divided evenly, with Vice President Kamala Harris as the tie-breaking vote.
We are going to have our work cut out for us with these slim margins and the frequently-used filibuster in the Senate, but we are hopeful that these victories will improve the prospects of moving forward USW-backed legislation. Stay tuned!
