PITTSBURGH – The United Steelworkers (USW) today said that laid-off Ormet workers will rally on Saturday, June 14, 2014 with elected officials, community leaders and others to support renewed efforts in Congress to extend unemployment for millions of men and women throughout the country whose benefits have been terminated.
As the U.S. economy continues its slow recovery, long-term unemployment continues to be a problem, as more than a third of unemployed Americans have been out of work for six months or longer.
Ohio Sen. Lou Gentile, Ohio House Rep. Jack Cera and Jennifer Garrison, a candidate for Ohio’s 6th Congressional District, are scheduled to speak at the rally, which will begin at 11 a.m. at USW Local 5724 in Clarington.
The USW represents 850,000 men and women employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in public sector and service occupations.
