BENTON, ARK. (Feb. 22) – The United Steelworkers (USW) today announced their support for former Arkansas Lt. Gov. Bill Halter in the state’s 2014 gubernatorial race.

“I am proud to announce that my Union, the United Steelworkers, is endorsing Bill Halter’s campaign to be the next Governor of Arkansas,” said USW District 13 Director Mickey Breaux. “Bill has stood up time and again for the working people of Arkansas. He was against the Wall Street bailout in large part because there was no accountability written into it. He has always maintained that our trade agreements be fair to American workers, not just free for global corporations.

“He has continuously fought for better education opportunities for all Arkansans,” Breaux said. “Our Union does not make a habit of endorsing a candidate this early – that only happens when the person earns it, and Bill has certainly done just that.”

Halter, a Democrat, served as Arkansas lieutenant governor from 2007 to 2011.

“Through Bill’s leadership, young Arkansans can now get a college education through the Lottery Scholarship program. As the spouse of an Arkansas public school teacher, I have seen the impact this has had,” said USW Sub-District Director Don Davies. “Since the inception of this scholarship, it has raised some $300 million and awarded almost 100,000 scholarships to our children that may not have been able to attend college otherwise. Bill has always stood up for those among us that need it the most. I will be voting for Bill because Arkansas needs his kind of leadership.”

The USW represents about 850,000 workers in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean in a wide variety of industries, ranging from glassmaking to mining, steel, oil, paper, tire and rubber to the public sector, service and health care industries.
