Marcus Hook, Pa.— United Steelworkers Union (USW) members of Local 10-901 overwhelmingly ratified a new, three-year contract with Sunoco, Inc. last night that includes the National Oil Bargaining pattern wages, benefits and contract language and resolution of local issues.
“This was probably one of the toughest negotiations I’ve been in during my 26 years with Sunoco,” Local 10-901 President Tim Kolodi said. “It was a fair settlement for both labor and the company. Now it’s time to move on.”
The three-year agreement includes the national pattern of 3 percent wage increases each year, a $2,500 lump sum payment, continuation of health care coverage with the employer paying 80 percent of the cost and no retrogression language, which now includes successorship and job security language.
No one will be getting a pay cut under the new contract. Originally, the company did not want to pay the transfer and shipping department operators the 3 percent raise.
Sunoco also wanted the ability to change the pension, sick time and medical benefits without bargaining with the union, but the local persevered and the company now has to bargain with the local over any changes.
Instead of using contractors, the company agreed to allow the maintenance employees to move between the Marcus Hook and Philadelphia refineries when there is a shutdown. These workers will also get more money for the travel time between the two facilities.
“Hopefully we can back the contractors out and hire more maintenance people,” Kolodi said.
Local 10-901 represents about 450 operators, maintenance workers and fire marshals at the Marcus Hook refinery. The local’s sister plant in Philadelphia is voting today on a new contract.
The USW represents 850,000 workers in the oil, chemical, atomic, paper, metals, rubber, glass and service industries.
