Washington, D.C. – The United Steelworkers (USW) today said that it will join other American labor unions to focus on the challenges facing working families, particularly women, through a series of activities leading up to the June 23 White House Summit on Working Families.
Activists and leaders from the USW Women of Steel and Next Generation programs will join a broad coalition of representatives from various labor unions and worker organizations in the week prior to the summit.
The diverse group will raise awareness and mobilize support for collective action as a solution to the challenges facing the nation’s working women, from equal pay to raising the minimum wage to sick leave and scheduling flexibility.
The week’s activities will culminate with an event on Sunday, June 22, where 250 workers from around the country will gather for a forum.
The participants, representing millions of workers across the country, will attend the summit along with AFL-CIO Secretary Treasurer Liz Shuler, who will speak on a panel.
A brief outline of the issues that will be at the center of the labor organizations’ activities this week are as follows:
Wednesday, June 18: Raising Wages
Thursday, June 19: Working Women
Friday, June 20: Collective Action
Sunday, June 22: Working Families Speak Up!
