(Milwaukee) – The United Steelworkers (USW) has endorsed Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett for governor of the state of Wisconsin. Barrett, winner of Tuesday’s Democratic primary election in Wisconsin, is opposing Republican Gov. Scott Walker in a recall election that will be held on June 5.
In a letter to Barrett, USW District 2 Director Michael Bolton said the union wholeheartedly supports his candidacy over Walker, who last year pushed a bill through the state Legislature ending collective bargaining rights for teachers and most other public workers.
“Time and time again, you have proven your commitment to the working people of Wisconsin,’’ Bolton wrote. “The United Steelworkers truly appreciate your support on the issues that mean the most to us – expanding and improving our economy, creating opportunities to put people back to work in family-sustaining jobs, and supporting the right for workers to bargain collectively for the pay and benefits they deserve.
“If the labor movement is to once again thrive and grow, these are the issues that must be addressed, and it is clear that you are the candidate willing to stand up and fight with us. We must join together to rebuild the middle class and make Wisconsin’s economy strong again.”
The USW’s District 2 is based in Menasha, Wis., and represents some 60,000 active and retired members in Wisconsin and Michigan. Overall, the USW represents about 850,000 working men and women in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean in a wide variety of industries, ranging from glassmaking to mining, paper, steel, tire and rubber and other manufacturing environments to the public sector, service and health care industries.
