PITTSBURGH (March 4) – The United Steelworkers today announced their endorsement of Elizabeth Colbert Busch in the May 7 special election in South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District.
“Elizabeth Colbert Busch has a long, proven track record of creating jobs and standing up for hard-working Americans, which is exactly the kind of leadership we need in Washington, D.C.,” said Daniel Flippo, director of USW District 9, which includes South Carolina. “From her track record of bringing green jobs to South Carolina, to her strong support for manufacturing and her experience as a negotiator, she’s proven that she can help end the partisan gridlock in Congress and get Americans back to work.”
“The people of South Carolina’s District 1 should be excited and proud at the prospect of having Ms. Busch as their representative in Congress.”
The special election will fill the vacancy left when Republican Tim Scott was appointed to the Senate after the resignation of Sen. Jim DeMint. A primary election is scheduled for March 19, with a runoff set for April 2 if necessary to determine party nominees. The general election is scheduled for May 7.
Busch, the sister of television talk show host Stephen Colbert, is the director of Business Development at Clemson University’s Restoration Institute. In that role, she helped bring the world’s largest wind turbine/grid simulator facility to South Carolina.
The USW represents about 850,000 workers in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean in a wide variety of industries, ranging from glassmaking to mining, steel, oil, paper, tire and rubber to the public sector, service and health care industries.
