(PITTSBURGH) – The United Steelworkers (USW) released this statement today from International President Leo W. Gerard in response to Thomas Perez winning Senate confirmation to lead the U.S. Labor Department:

“With this confirmation, American workers will have a Labor Secretary who has a long and distinguished record of standing up and fighting for the rights of his fellow Americans. Throughout this career, Thomas Perez has worked hard to protect some of our nation’s most vulnerable workers from discrimination and exploitation.

“Whatever the issue – civil rights, health and safety, immigration, health care, Mr. Perez has always been on the side of working people.  Now he is pledging to create jobs, enforce laws on overtime pay and help the Obama administration raise the federal minimum wage.

“The USW will strongly support the Secretary and this agenda.”

The USW represents about 850,000 workers in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean in a wide variety of industries, ranging from glassmaking to mining, steel, oil, paper, tire and rubber to the public sector, service and health care industries. For more information: www.usw.org.
