Pittsburgh (Apr. 9) – Leo W. Gerard, president of the United Steelworkers (USW) issued the following statement today on the death yesterday of Mark Ayers, President of the Building and Construction Trades Department (BCTD), AFL-CIO:

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the untimely death of Mark Ayers.  BCTD President Ayers has USW recognition for his leadership and commitment to the construction trades union members for whom he fought with a legacy of integrity during these challenging times. He joined us in raising our voice in unity for infrastructure investments to create family-supportive jobs on projects that supported America’s future.

“He set a standard as a trade unionist for us all to make the world a better place for everyone, but especially for those who struggle daily.

“We offer our condolences and deepest sympathy to his family, the IBEW where he began his union activism in Peoria, and the members of the affiliate unions of the Building and Construction Trades Department he has led since 2007.”
