Pittsburgh – The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) today voted affirmatively to extend the tariffs for another five years on stainless steel sheet and strip imports from Japan, Korea and Taiwan, but voted negatively for continuing tariffs on the same product imports from Germany (5-1), Italy (5-1) and Mexico (4-2).
USW International Vice President Tom Conway, who chairs the union negotiating committee with the stainless steel industry and testified at the ITC final public hearing for what is called a sunset review, issued a brief statement saying:
“The USW and the domestic stainless steel industry are pleased that the antidumping orders against Japan, Korea and Taiwan will continue for another five years. However, we are disappointed that the ITC voted to end the orders against Germany, Italy and Mexico. We will join the industry in examining the written decisions of the individual commissioners when the opinions are issued to determine whether to appeal the negative decisions to the Court of International Trade.”
The USW represents more than 1,000 workers who produce stainless sheet and strip at Allegheny Ludlum facilities in Pennsylvania, Indiana, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Ohio, plus workers employed at AK Steel’s Mansfield Works in Ohio.
