Awards
A.Q. Evans Award
This award is given to local unions for outstanding accomplishments in occupational safety and health. A.Q. Evans was a local union president who fought courageously for the OSHA lead standard, even as he was dying from lead poisoning and from the dangerous drugs the company insisted he take to “flush” the lead from his system. Karen Silkwood Award
This award is given to local unions for union building and solidarity through health, safety and environment. Falkowski/Seguin Award
This award is given to local unions for outstanding work in environmental protection. Paul Falkowski and Homer Seguin were two USWA staff representatives, who together built environmental activism into the union’s work in Ontario during the 1960s and 70s. J. William Lloyd Award
This award is given to an individual or organization from outside the union for outstanding contributions to health, safety or environment. Bill Lloyd was an epidemiologist whose research established that coke oven work causes cancer. Not content with simply researching occupational health problems, he left academia to join the USW safety and health staff. The award honors his combination of academic excellence and committee activism. Click here for the nomination form and click here to view past recipients.
Award for Industrial Valor
I.W. Abel Award
This award is given to individuals who act heroically to attempt to save a life in the workplace. The award was established by I.W. Abel, third president of the USWA. It can be given at any time, not just at the conference. Click here for the nomination form and click here to view past recipients.
