Labor Day with an International Flair

Almost 20,000 marchers took up more than 12 blocks in a spirited celebration of Labor Day in Toronto, Canada. Among the crowd of nurses, teachers, autoworkers, actors and steelworkers were United Steelworkers (USW) International President Leo W. Gerard, USW National Director for Canada Ken Neumann and General Secretary of Los Mineros in Mexico Napoleón Gómez Urrutia.

Union and non-union workers, touting countless labour flags and banners, marched to the beat of various bands from Queen St. and University Ave. to Exhibition Place. Along the parade route were families and children cheering on their parents and loved ones.

Parade organizer John Cartwright, president of Toronto and York Region Labour Council said, "This is a very important annual tradition where workers can march in pride for their contributions to the work force.”
